Stories for the Silver Tree

Bran has never felt at home in her small town. So she leaves…

Stories for the Silver Tree combines spoken word, music, soundscape and song to interweave both new and old narratives to create a fresh and contemporary storytelling show. Alternating between mythical landscapes and personal narratives of change, growth and journeying, the show tells the story of Bran, a young woman finding her place in the world.

Using story, song and sawing, follow Bran through towns and cities, down long roads through dark forests and beyond, as she encounters many people who seeks to exploit or corrupt her.

You Are Here

You Are Here

Chris (SonOfNeil)

Tickets: £5

Synopsis

You Are Here is a performative lecture which explores the size of space. It attempts to understand and explain the sheer magnitude of awesome that is our universe by using; quantum mechanics, astrophysics, poorly phrased metaphors, and nonsensical, unintelligible concepts.

For example the show will use metaphors and phrases like:

Inconceivably Grand, the whole Infinity of creation, a bee in a cathedral, waltzing in the dark, like a raisin pudding, a bit like the sugary dusting on a fairy cake. And loads loads more.

This show is inspired by the novel The Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy taking its surrealist vocabulary and odd British pessimism.

So come and get used to the awesome world of being a very small speck in an infinitely large universe. And the unadulterated excitement coupled with existential dread when you realise you are an invisible dot on an invisible dot labelled “You Are Here”.

Synopsis

Sam wants to tell you about five encounters he had on a site called Craigslist. Sam is anxious about the way he gets to know people. About the way he self-sabotages his attempts to communicate and reach out to those around him. Sam wants this to be a chance for you to get to know him. 5 Encounters on a Site Called Craigslist is a new solo show performed by one person. One person who needs an audience to tell his story. It’s a show that, in exploring this one person’s self-sabotaged attempts to know those around him, considers the extent to which a group of people in a darkened room can ever get to know each other. Desperately hilarious and achingly bleak, 5 Encounters is an intricate and tender question mark around our attempts to encounter each other in this technologized world.

Casting Clinic

Nicola Reynolds

Free Development Event

Tickets:

Maximum Participants: 5 (for clinic sessions), Unticketed Q&A

This session is an opportunity for emerging artists to find out more about the crucial and creative world of casting! Casting Directors play a vital role in connecting performers and projects of all shapes and sizes. We want to give developing actors an insight into the nitty gritty of the casting process, and advice on how to engage with it more effectively.

Nicola Reynolds is a Cardiff-based, welsh Casting Director. She is also a Writer, Director and Performer for stage and screen.

The first hour of the session will be a Q+A with Nicola. In which she will be giving participants an insight into her role as a Casting Director. She will also be providing general advice on how to work alongside Casting Directors, drawing upon her own experience as a Writer, Director and Performer. The Q+A will be unticketed and open to all!

After this, Nicola will be hosting half hour one-on-one slots, which can be booked in advance (for free, of course!), and can be used in whatever way the participant desires. You could ask for:

- Bespoke advice on how to make yourself more “cast-able”
- Audition advice/tips
- Feedback on a monologue/audition piece
- More information on Cardiff’s theatre industry

This is your opportunity to personally engage with a seasoned and experienced industry professional. Use it how you will! We highly recommend that those who book one-on-one slots try to be present at the Q+A, so that they can make the most of their personal time with Nicola!

Synopsis

Flash intends to entertain and ‘rock’ with high energy, gig theatre, a feel good factor, a mini drum kit and music.  Underneath lies an autobiographical story of one man’s mental health, though more as inspiration for the events you see.  This includes the occasional glimpse of an obsession for the music and members of the band Queen.

Flash started development via the Volcano Theatre Yr Odyn Artist Award. This allows an artist some time, budget and rehearsal space to develop a new work. My proposal was to explore devising with new methods, to perform and collaborate in areas that for me would be new territory.

Created with fringe venues in mind, Flash had its first performance at Volcano’s Novemberfest 2016.  It has since continued to evolve; therefore its performance at CFTF 2017 will be a new development of this work.

Where Do Little Birds Go?

No Boundaries

Tickets: £9 / £7 conc.

Synopsis

“I knew I'd be lucky to get out of this alive...I knew too much, see. I knew what the Krays did to people they needed to disappear."

It’s 1966. Lucy Fuller is 18 years old. She loves musicals and make up, and her job at Winston’s Nightclub. One night Lucy is kidnapped by the Kray Twins and locked in a flat with an escaped murderer. This is the terrifying story of Lucy’s time with Ronnie, Reggie and Frank ‘The Mad Axeman’ Mitchell.

'Where Do Little Birds Go?' is Camilla Whitehill’s poignant tale of crime, kidnap and lost innocence, which paints a heart-wrenching yet endearing portrait of London's East End in the 1960s. This powerful one-woman play is brought to life in an intimate and immersive production from Cardiff’s very own No Boundaries theatre.

Frag(mental)

Tickets: £5

Synopsis

Frag(mental), founded by Krystal Dawn Campbell, is a South Wales based, evolving collective of dance, music and performance artists.  Conceived in 2015, their site specific work draws from fragments of personal experiences, storytelling, and life observations.

Hiraeth: I didn’t get to breathe today is a response to the founder’s ongoing realities and difficulties of having left the only place she ever felt at home – South Wales.  Krystal shares; “It took 25 years to find somewhere I felt safe and happy, but in the pursuit of developing as a dance artist, I had to move away to undergo conservatoire training. Having the opportunity to pursue my dreams is amazing and I am truly grateful, but I have sacrificed a lot for it, and moving out of South Wales has hit me hard.”

This Frag(mental) collaboration aims to bring an intimate, true unveiling of personal encounters, thoughts and feelings that heighten the emotions of “hiraeth”.

This showcase also includes dance work by friends of Frag(mental), bringing a mixed evening of site specific dance performance.

Disclaimer: We want you to feel all close and intimate with us, and if you get close enough you may even get spattered with a bit of dry soil!... Please do not send us your cleaning bill!
