produced by Old Sole Theatre Company

Genre: New Writing

One part whiskey plus one part hard cider equals a catastrophic routine and the modern man on the verge of extinction.

Misfire is a blistering exposé of toxic masculinity, influence and staggeringly bad comedy. Old Sole Theatre Company presents a new short play by James Neale; an ‘anti-stand up’ exploring fragile masculinity on a post-Weinstein stage.

This pint-sized play directly challenges its audience on preconceptions of gender, intimacy and power in the wake of the #MeToo movement.

Drawing on his 30 years experience in performance and clowning on stage and in the streets, the class will focus on exploring performers' unique voice through improvisation while anchored in act format and construction. Our guiding principle will be: failing is the tipping point to achieving something new. We will endeavour to develop our practice of stage play, mining real joy and the chaos of freedom to help us break from the norm and stay present in the performative moment.

Becoming Human – Pinocchio Retold
written by Alice Muzzioli and Inari Soinila (based on the novel Pinocchio by Carlo Collodi)
produced by Fucktons of Fairies

Genre: Physical Theatre/New Writing

Becoming Human – Pinocchio Retold tells the story of the world's most famous puppet, set against the demands and prerogatives of modern Western society. Following his footsteps from birth to adulthood, we are invited to see through his eyes what it means to become socialised. Though Pinocchio is shaped in mind and body to fit into society, as an individual he still struggles to find meaning, love, and identity. This tragicomedy takes a unflinching look at social values and structures, while inviting the audience to laugh and be mesmerised by a caravan of characters (all played by Muzzioli and Soinila). The play poses questions about what makes up our core identity as humans and how we can deal with modern life - questions that Pinocchio grapples with throughout the play, and eventually comes to terms with.

Age restrictions: Strong language. Anyone under the age of 12 will not be admitted to this event.

Archetypical
by Thania Acarón / UWTSD Contemporary Performance Swansea College of Art

Genre: Physical Theatre

Archetypical is a promenade-style physical theatre performance that explores four archetypes of women: Saint, Martyr, Witch and Whore, placed in a contemporary context. Mixing humour and surrealism, audiences are invited to question and engage with critical notions of women’s bodies being sold, bartered, inspected and paraded, portrayed through metaphoric physical imagery. A devised performance piece developed within UWTSD Swansea College of Art’s Contemporary Performance programme, and under the direction of Thania Acarón, Archetypical features a live art-inspired comedic journey that characterises the human form.

Age restrictions: Adult themes. Anyone under the age of 14 must be accompanied by a parent/guardian.

Content warning: Please note that this involves an element of 'promenade' theatre, i.e. the audience may be required to walk/stand at times (wheelchair friendly).

Access information: The Big Top is accessed by two flights of stairs, and we regret is not wheelchair accessible.

So, what are you waiting for? The next Buzzfeed Quiz?
